DON’T provoke our sheriffs, Rep. Matt Marshall fights sheriff bill’s retroactive impact
During a more than 7 hour debate on Senate Bill 5974, Rep. Matt Marshall, R-Eatonville, warns against the potential fallout of the bill that would allow the decertification and removal of elected sheriffs. Marshall highlights the unfairness of applying new standards in the bill to those who already won their elections and held office under different rules.
Pointing to a quote by Marvin Heemeyer, “I was always reasonable until I had to be unreasonable. Sometimes reasonable men must do unreasonable things,” Marshall emphasizes the frustration shared by sheriffs across the state. He urges his colleagues to support an amendment protecting currently serving sheriffs from being targeted by the new law’s provisions.
