Rep. Matt Marshall responds to Gov. Ferguson’s statement on Democrats’ $12 billion tax proposal
Rep. Matt Marshall, R-Eatonville, a member of the House Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement in response to Gov. Ferguson’s comments on $12 billion in tax hikes proposed by legislative Democrats:
“I am glad to see Governor Ferguson pushing back on $12 billion in proposed tax increases, his criticism falls short. He warns of potential federal cuts to programs like Medicaid and child welfare—yet his own party is actively cutting those very services while also passing legislation to make living in our state even more expensive.
“Democrats continue passing bills that raise the cost of health insurance and groceries, deepening Washington’s affordability crisis. The real threat to Washington families isn’t what might happen in D.C.—it’s what is happening in Olympia.
“This week alone, House Democrats voted to slash support for low-income families, including child support for single moms on TANF and care for women facing postpartum depression. At the same time, they found funding for health care for undocumented immigrants. That’s not responsible budgeting—it’s prioritizing ideology over families.
“If we want to protect essential services and restore affordability, we must force this Legislature to budget based on priorities, not politics.
“It’s great that the governor sees $12 billion in new taxes as unsustainable. But the truth is, any new taxes are unacceptable. Our state budget has doubled in the last decade, not because of need, but because of reckless spending. Families don’t get to spend beyond their means, and neither should government.”
